__ RIO 2016 Olympic Games masterplan solving crowd flow issue and creating a dynamic landscape and promenade, drawing inspiration from Brazilian native ecotypes and from the biodiversity rich and colorful nature of Brazil.
While working for AECOM, Simon produced the masterplan for the RIO 2016 Olympic Games where they won the competition to create this complex masterplan, with crowd flow being a major concern. Simon played a leading role in the development of the games' landscape masterplan, managing the production of the masterplan and associated detailed design drawings, including terrace and planting designs. Our planting scheme drew inspiration from Brazilian native ecotypes, creating a dynamic and locally rooted aesthetic. The main promenade, conceptually representing the River of January (Rio de Janeiro), wound through seven distinctly planted terraces, each with its own unique character and function. This design not only celebrated the city's natural heritage but also ensured efficient crowd movement and an engaging environment for visitors.
__ The weaving passage seamlessly connects all areas of the Olympic park, allowing for a smooth and logical passage between games. Greenery is added to soften the otherwise quite industrial location and complement the space and atmosphere with native Brazilian rainforest vegetation, inviting birds and other creatures to seek rest in and among the visitors.
